This month we are looking at Bob Ross. He painted on television from 1983 to 1994. Soft trees, mountains, little cabins, skies that looked like they took all day. The useful part for young artists was not the trees. It was how he talked while he made them. He called mistakes happy accidents. A blob of paint in the wrong place became a cloud, a bush, or a rock. He never told viewers they had ruined the picture. He showed them how to keep going. A few things worth borrowing: • Start before you feel ready. He finished a whole scene in about half an hour. • Use a big brush first. Details come later. • If something looks wrong, turn it into something else instead of starting over. • Talk kindly to yourself while you work. You do not have to paint mountains. Draw your street, your window, a bird, your snack. The Bob Ross part is the attitude: keep the brush moving. When you finish, sign it with your first name and the year, give it a short title, and upload it. We would love to see what your happy accident turned into.
